This is the question we get asked more than any other. Both electrolysis and laser hair removal are legitimate treatments — and both are widely available in Dubai — but they are fundamentally different in how they work, what they can treat, and what result they deliver.
Laser hair removal uses a wavelength of light that is absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle. The absorbed energy heats and damages the follicle. This is efficient for large areas — legs, back, chest — when there is a strong contrast between dark hair and light skin. Sessions are fast because laser treats many follicles at once.
Electrolysis uses a tiny electrical current delivered through a fine probe inserted at the root of a single hair. The current permanently destroys the follicle. Because it targets the root physically rather than heating pigment, it works on every hair type — including light, blonde, grey, and red hair — and on every skin tone, including darker skin where laser is often unsafe or ineffective.
Where laser wins: speed. If you have dark hair on lighter skin and want large body areas treated, laser is efficient — though 'permanent' laser results are typically permanent hair reduction, not true permanent removal. Most laser patients require maintenance sessions indefinitely.
Where electrolysis wins: everywhere else. PCOS or hormonal hair growth. Darker skin tones. Grey, white, blonde, or red hair. Fine facial hair. Sensitive areas like the eyebrows and lip. And critically, if you want true permanence, electrolysis is the only method medical authorities recognise as such.
On pain: both have discomfort. Laser feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin. Electrolysis feels like a brief warm pinch per hair. Both are manageable, and our practitioners use techniques that make longer sessions comfortable.
On cost per session: electrolysis appears more expensive because it works hair by hair and requires more sessions. But because the result is genuinely permanent — no maintenance sessions for the rest of your life — most patients find electrolysis cheaper over a lifetime.
Which should you choose? If you have dark hair, light skin, and want fast large-area treatment: laser is a reasonable option. Everyone else — and particularly patients with hormonal hair growth, darker skin, or fine or light hair — electrolysis will give you a result that laser cannot.
